Dual Derby winning and last year’s 2000 Guineas winner Camelot has been retired due to being found lame this morning. Unbeaten as a 2 year old including a Group One victory in the Racing Post Trophy he went on to greater things as a 3 year old. He won the 2000 Guineas before his impressive run in the Derby and then went onto win the Irish equivalent as well. As a 4 year old this season he only managed one win from three starts.
O’Brien told www.coolmore.com: “From the very first time we saw him at the sales we just loved him, he was the perfect racehorse, a beautiful horse with a terrific action. Speed, class and a super-intelligent horse to go with it – he had it all.
“Unfortunately we never saw the same brilliance on the racecourse as we had done before his colic operation, but he was showing signs of it at home in recent weeks so it’s obviously disappointing that he won’t get the opportunity to run again.”
He will now go to stud for Coolmore next season.
